LED Signage – MakeLehighValley

We’re taking an old LED sign and hacking it so that we can do our hd74os164p thing. Code we’re writing to run all of this can be found on the github repo. I found that the display circuit is using hd74l1s64p of the registers as 7-bit registers, connecting the 7th bit pin 12 to the Serial In Pin 1 on the next in the chain. The 10th register acts as a 6-bit register and the 11th and final register only uses 3 bits.


LED Signage

The first two columns and last two columns are not wired into the circuit even though there are allowances in the PCB for one at the front and one on the end that are not used so we can expand this with just a couple datqsheet in the right place. The LEDs are in 15 5×7 Matrices.

However, you datxsheet to subtract 4 columns, two on each end so that’s 28 LEDs not being used bringing us to usable LEDs. I resoldered and wired the connector as the connections to the board were getting worn from frequent bending. The color code pin order is in the attached pinout table. Turning on the device is as simple as applying 5v and Gnd.

Any column will display something if it is then grounded. See stuff by applying ground to one of the columns.

8-Bit Parallel-Out Serial-in Shift Register

We’ll probably start by hooking it up to an Hr74ls164p to figure out how the display works and then consider a more dedicated and specialized board. This also has the advantage of running off the same 5v that the display runs off.
