I’m a EE and have been an embedded software engineer for 25 years developing Software Controlled Radios. I was hoping for a detailed book that exemplified the title of the book. But instead the information and examples are thin.
It seems to me that the author may have never actually worked in a lab environment and implemented software defined radios. Instead I suspect he just wrote technical papers on the subject. The book contains several “Case Studies” but it appears like they are just ideas and were never actually implemented.
Knowledge does not equal understanding and implementation. Also the book seems poorly organized and the topics constantly jump around. I was hoping for a lot more from this book and was disappointed. If you are a EE that writes embedded code and need details on how to go about “Implementing Software Defined Radio” including signal acquisition, demodulation, and decoding, then skip this book. This book is not for engineers who create the real systems.
It seems like this book is more for the “view graph engineer” who needs jargon for his Power Point slides. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. As someone interested in diving back into software defined radio technology with broader scalability than specialized radios I’ve worked on after ignoring it for many years I found this to be an extremely well written book.
The references listed are no doubt a treasure trove for digging deeper into specific topics. I think the book should be mandatory reading for both engineers and technical managers working in this space as it touches on such practical aspects that come up on such highly technical and complex projects.
The discussion of development tools and design flow, and even the dynamics of the team environment are the most frank and believable I’ve ever seen — something usually ignored in technical texts but something that makes this work really stand out. Great work, highly recommended. This book will be very useful for engineers and researchers who develop, design, and test SDRs because it contains a lot of practical advice.
It will be helpful for system engineers who need a bridge from theoretical knowledge of the radio architecture to its actual implementation in software and hardware. For software and hardware engineers, it can help build a bridge in the opposite direction.
Although the theoretical foundation is presented in the book, the emphasis is on practical solutions. To this end, it covers a very wide range of topics – this is the main reason why this book stands out. They give a comprehensive overview of standard SCAs software communication architecturesstandard frameworks for SDR description, and currently available SDR development platforms. I have not seen such a good description of current standards and tools available for SDR design in previously published books.
These topics are of high practical importance, yet many engineers are unaware of the tools that can simplify their work. Many chapters are good for other digital signal processing projects as well.
For example, the discussion of parallelization to achieve higher throughput is generally applicable. The chapter on state-of-the-art components is very up-to-date, and I like the comparison have not seen it before between SDRs and high-end test equipment. Appendix A Introduction to Communications Theory provides a very readable although mostly qualitative overview of communication theory and its applications to modern communication systems.
Reading these 30 pages will allow you to follow discussions in communications-related meetings even without prior background in communication theory. A separate list of abbreviations is a nice touch – many books do not provide it.
